Air pollution is a major problem across the world. Burning coal, wood and fossil fuels causes fine particles to disperse into the environment and these particles enter the lungs leading to a number of health problems. Airborne particulate matter can worsen asthma, coughing and reduce the ability of the lungs to function optimally. It can also increase the chances of developing bronchitis, headaches and irregular heartbeat, and can lead to premature death due to lung and/or heart disease.

However, there are few things that you can do to protect your loved ones from the ill-effects of air pollution. Some of them are wear a mask or get an air purifier in India. Let’s look in detail at some of the protective measures that you can employ:

  1. Stay Indoors

If there is persistent smog and the weather forecasts higher than usual pollution levels, it is best to get your loved ones to stay indoors. Direct and prolonged exposure to pollution can increase the risk of heart attacks, asthma, respiratory infections, lung diseases and other health problems. If possible, conduct your outdoor activities in the afternoon when smog is at its lowest, encourage your kids to remain active indoors and if possible, utilize the work from home option. It is not possible to lock yourself in the house, so try and move during the hours when smog is cleared.

  1. Wear a Mask

Like mentioned earlier, it is not possible to stay indoors and get a day’s task done. One of the easiest and most effective solutions is the mask. Wear one when stepping out of the house, and get your loved ones in a habit of wearing one.  Make sure you invest in a good quality air mask that protects you from dust, particulate matter, etc. Ensure each family member has their own mask that should carry with them always and don it when outdoor air quality is poor or pollution levels are high.

  1. Use an Air Purifier

While you cannot control the quality of air outdoors, you can definitely do something about the indoor air quality. You can use an air purifier. Nowadays you can get an air purifier in India with ease. Opt for one that comes with a HEPA filter. Such an air cleaning machine has the ability to trap particulate matter that is 0.3 microns.

  1. Install Mesh Screen

Install fine-mesh screens for all windows in your home. A fine mesh will stop insects, mosquitoes and large particulate matters from entering your home. A mesh is just a protection and cannot stop fine dust to enter your home. If outside air pollution is severe, close the windows. You can open the windows after air quality improves to ventilate your home and improve indoor air quality.

  1. Place Air Purifying Plants Round the House

There are many houseplants to help clean indoor air and improve its quality. Plants like peace lily, English ivy, lily turf, florist’s chrysanthemum, spider plant, Chinese evergreen, and golden pothos help to clean indoor air and remove harmful gases like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and ammonia.

These are five ways you can protect your family from breathing problems due to air pollution. If you are buying an air purifier in India, go with a trusted brand to ensure you get the benefits you envisaged.
